Body Shape Quiz

The internet is full of "what body shape am I" articles that ask you to compare yourself to a celebrity or look at vague drawings. None of that works. Body shape is mathematical — four measurements give you a definitive answer.

This guide walks you through the measurements and the math. Or, if you'd rather skip the math, our free body shape calculator does it for you.

The four measurements

You'll need a soft tape measure (the cloth kind dressmakers use; a metal one won't wrap your body smoothly).

  1. Shoulders — across your back, from the outermost point of one shoulder to the other. Stand naturally, not raised.
  2. Bust — the fullest part of your bust, parallel to the floor, with a non-padded bra on.
  3. Waist — the narrowest point of your torso. Usually about an inch above the belly button.
  4. Hips — the widest point of your hips and seat.

Round each to the nearest whole inch. Write them down.

The math (four checks)

Now compare. Use these definitions:

Hourglass

  • Bust and hips within 1 inch of each other
  • Waist at least 9 inches smaller than both

Top Hourglass

  • Same as Hourglass but bust is 1-3 inches bigger than hips

Pear (Triangle)

  • Hips at least 2 inches bigger than bust
  • Defined waist (at least 7 inches smaller than hips)

Spoon

  • Same as Pear, but with a visible "shelf" above the hip line where you tend to gain weight

Inverted Triangle

  • Shoulders/bust at least 2 inches bigger than hips
  • Waist not dramatically defined

Apple (Round/Oval)

  • Bust is the largest measurement
  • Waist within 4 inches of bust and hip
  • Slimmer legs

Rectangle

  • Bust, waist, and hips all within 5% of each other
  • No dramatic narrowing at the waist

Diamond

  • Hips wider than shoulders
  • Waist undefined or larger than bust
  • Slim arms and legs

Athletic

  • Shoulders and hips aligned
  • Slightly defined waist
  • Visible muscle tone

Skinny / Slender

  • All measurements small relative to standard sizes
  • Linear proportions

What if you fall between two?

Most people do. Bodies aren't built for textbook diagrams. If you're between shapes, the closer match is usually:

  • Hourglass-ish but bust slightly bigger? → Top Hourglass
  • Pear-ish but legs are slim? → Spoon
  • Rectangle but with slight curve? → Athletic
  • Inverted Triangle but with defined waist? → Hourglass with broad shoulders

Pick whichever matches better and dress for it; you'll find the styling advice still applies.

Why measurements not pictures

Looking at celebrity photos to "match" your shape doesn't work because:

  • Photos are filtered, posed, and tailored to flatter
  • Your perception of your own body is inaccurate (this is well-documented psychologically)
  • The same dress on two different "hourglass" celebrities can look different because of height, color, and lighting

Measurements take all of that out. The numbers tell you what's actually there.

How shapes change

Body shape is roughly fixed — bone structure determines about 70% of it. The remaining 30% shifts with weight, age, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and (slightly) exercise. Your shape today is probably very close to your shape in 5 years; it's not close to your shape in 20.

Most people fit into one shape for the bulk of adulthood, with minor drift. Re-measure every couple of years if you've gained or lost weight; otherwise, the original measurement holds.

Use the calculator

If math isn't your thing, our free body shape calculator takes the four measurements and gives you the answer in one click — including which lingerie cuts and clothing styles tend to flatter your specific shape.

What to do once you know your shape

Read 10 Women's Body Shapes Explained for the full styling guide for each. The TL;DR by shape:

  • Pear/Spoon — emphasize upper body, balance hips
  • Apple/Diamond — define the waist, V-necks lengthen torso
  • Hourglass — show the waist, anything fitted
  • Inverted Triangle — soften shoulders, add lower volume
  • Rectangle/Athletic — create curves, peplum and ruffles
  • Skinny/Slender — add volume, layers and texture
