Bear Women: The Type With No Fixed Depth
Every other entry in this framework hands you a number. The northwest one, between Buffalo and Wolf, gives up on the measurement that usually matters most and says the type covers both ends of the range. That is not a lapse in the source. It is what a blend looks like when it is written honestly.

Almost every entry in this framework wants to give you a figure. So many fingers between the clitoris and the opening. So many inches deep. The northwest entry declines on the one that usually carries the most weight.
Some Bear Women, Amara Charles writes, are fairly deep inside, like a Wolf Woman. Some are as shallow as a Buffalo Woman. The type simply covers both.
That is not a gap. It is what happens when a description is built out of two other descriptions, and it makes this the most honest entry in the set.
Between Buffalo and Wolf
Charles places nine types on a wheel with four cardinal points: Sheep in the South, Buffalo in the West, Wolf in the North, Deer in the East. Bear sits at the northwest, between Buffalo and Wolf, and takes from both. Each of those two has its own article in this series.
Only neighbours blend. A type at the northwest can draw on West and North and nothing else, so the system has no Buffalo and Deer type and no Wolf and Sheep type, those being opposite pairs. That single constraint is what fixes the number of types at nine.
It also fixes the length of this article. The four blended types get a short entry in the source, covering direction, physical features and temperament, while the cardinal types get long blocks of measurements. There is no more Bear material to have.
The anatomy
Lips. Thick, in the manner of the Buffalo description, though somewhat less plush, and they may take the spread butterfly-wing shape the Wolf description is built around. Thickness and shape both vary enormously between real bodies, and the two sides frequently differ from each other, which is ordinary rather than a problem. The full case for that is in Are My Labia Normal? The Honest Answer.
Distance from clitoris to opening. This is the one measurement the Bear entry does commit to, and it puts it at the far end of the range: nearly as long as the longest of the nine types. This distance is the identifying measurement of the entire framework, and Charles's method for it is simple enough to do in a minute. Lay your fingers side by side underneath the clitoris and count how many fit between it and the entrance.
Inside. The sensitive front-wall area sits fairly far back. Depth varies, as above, from Wolf-like to Buffalo-like.
The blend formula applies here as it does to the other three noncardinal types: the internal features of one neighbour with the external features of the other, or the reverse.
Pattern and timing, in Charles's account
Northwest, in her wheel, is the place of pattern, timing and what she calls the Sacred Body Image, and her whole character description runs off timing. Everything in this section is hers.
She describes Bear Women as vigilant and protective, relishing physical sensation the way she says Buffalo Women do, with the quick mind she attributes to Wolf Women. She describes a pace that can be luxuriously slow and then climb fast. Her advice to a partner is almost entirely about sequence: learn her patterns of arousal, the order of what works, the moment she wants to turn inward and the moment she is ready for more. She says bears are unpredictable and worth giving room, and she puts weight on what happens afterwards, on holding, talking and sleeping.
She also uses hibernation as a metaphor for a behavioural cycle, saying Bear Women must watch the timing of their withdrawals or become too reclusive. That is a framework image, not a clinical observation, and it is worth being clear about which it is. If withdrawal and low mood are a genuine pattern in your life, that belongs with a doctor rather than with a wheel.
The challenge she sets is letting go of over-protective defences and bringing creative power out into daylight. The sounds she names for a Bear Woman's pleasure are the Longing of the Magical Dream.
Decide for yourself
Charles's own instruction is to read the descriptions and decide which one you think you are. She says a genital type cannot easily be seen, and that a woman may have one direction's anatomy and none of the qualities described alongside it. Her framework, in other words, expects the body and the personality to come apart, and treats that as unremarkable.
For a type defined by variability, that fits. Anatomy varies. The rest of it is a system, and it belongs to the person who wrote it.
