The Complete Guide to Underwear Fabrics - What to Wear and When
Why Fabric Matters
Your underwear fabric affects comfort, health, and longevity more than most people realize. Here is a breakdown of every common fabric and when to choose it.
Cotton
Best for: Daily wear, warm climates, sensitive skin
Breathable, absorbent, hypoallergenic. The gold standard for everyday underwear. Downside: can retain moisture and feels heavy when wet.
Modal (Micromodal)
Best for: Elevated everyday wear, year-round comfort
Made from beech tree pulp, 50% more absorbent than cotton. Incredibly soft. Resists shrinking. More expensive but lasts longer.
Nylon/Polyamide
Best for: Seamless styles, activewear, no-VPL needs
Smooth, lightweight, quick-drying. Can be less breathable in heat. Look for styles with a cotton-lined gusset for hygiene.
Mesh
Best for: Breathability, hot climates, sporty looks
Highly breathable due to open weave. Can range from sporty to luxurious depending on gauge.
Silk
Best for: Special occasions, luxury feel
Temperature regulating, incredibly soft. Requires hand washing and is expensive. Not practical for daily use.
Lace
Best for: Aesthetic occasions, matching sets
Can be made from any fiber. Comfort depends on stretch and softness. Always check if the gusset is cotton-lined.
The Rule of Thumb
Cotton or modal for daily, synthetic for function, silk and lace for special.
