Shapewear Sizing Guide: Why You Are Probably Wearing the Wrong Size

After years of squeezing into shapewear and being miserable I finally learned that I was sizing wrong. Here is what I wish someone had told me earlier.

Common sizing mistakes:

  1. Going too small for more compression - This is the biggest mistake. Smaller does NOT mean more smoothing. It means bulging at the edges, rolling, digging, and the shapewear actually creating MORE lumps than it smooths. Always buy your actual size.

  2. Using your pants size - Shapewear sizing is based on your actual body measurements, not your clothing size. A size 10 in jeans does not necessarily mean a Medium in Spanx. Measure your waist and hips and check the actual size chart.

  3. Ignoring torso length - If you are tall or have a long torso, standard shapewear will ride down constantly. Look for brands that offer long/tall options. Spanx has them. Honeylove has them. It is a game changer.

  4. Not considering the garment you are wearing over it - Heavier fabrics are more forgiving so you can wear lighter compression. Thin clingy dresses need firmer hold. Match the level to the outfit.

My measuring tips:

  • Measure at the fullest part of your hips, not your waist
  • Measure while wearing underwear, not over clothing
  • If you are between sizes, go UP

Proper sizing transformed shapewear from a torture device into something I actually do not mind wearing.

I used to think spending more on lingerie was a waste, but quality really does make a difference.
